Make Your Character Cry

Put your character in danger. Don't give your character what they want. Ruin his/her day. Put them in a sticky situation. Spill the milk. Drop the toast (butter side down, of course). Set fire to their memories. Burn the cake. It's all about tension to get the ball rolling.
